The island's name is derived from the Whales and Whale Sharks that come into the small crescent-shaped lagoon between the months of April and July to feed on the abundant krill and plankton. Indeed the people and the whales of the archipelago share a common history. In times past the whale was considered to be the salvation of the fisherman, protecting him from the forces of nature and also providing him with a bountiful catch.
To the fishermen these giants of the sea are known as Ong, which literally means grandfather, reflecting the level of respect in which they are held. Throughout the archipelago the small islands are dotted with what appear to be beach temples. In actual fact these are whale cemeteries, created by the fishing communities which inhabit the area. At the start of each fishing season numerous festivals are held in Southern and Central Vietnam to honor the whale and pray for a successful and safe year on the seas.
Vietnam has more than two thousands miles of coastline offering many wonderful white sand beaches. The most popular beaches are Vung Tau, just north of the Mekong Delta; and Nha Trang, near Da Lat, where the clear, turquoise waters offer wonderful leisure holidays.
Nha Trang sees a heavy local and international tourist influx, especially in the summer. The central beachside city area is quite busy and full of cheap guesthouses and small restaurants.
