Vietnam is full of natural diversity due to its geographical shape as well as its different climate and elevation zones. There are mountainous regions with subtropical forests, river deltas with vast mudflats, coastal mangroves, tropical rainforests and saltpans. More than 800 bird species have been reported from these highly diverse habitats, some of them endemic to small regions.

Where to go birding in Vietnam?

Bird watching in Vietnam is mostly arranged in national parks and nature reserves.

In the southern Vietnam, you can do bird watching in Cat Tien national park for about 2, 3, 4 days. There are other small spots in Vietnam Mekong delta including Tram Chim wetland reserve area, muddy beaches in Tien Giang or Ben Tre provinces.

In Vietnam central highland, Da Lat is a great place for birding. You can enjoy both unique birdlife and cool climate with beautiful landscape in this town. There are other habitats in Yok Don national park. The deciduous depterocarps forest, and Serepok river supports habitat for Mekong Wagtail. Some excellent sites can be found in Kon Tum plateau such as Mang Den and Lo Xo pass. The new road in between Kon Tum and Quang Nam provinces near Ngoc Linh mt gives us a chance to see Golden-winged Laughingthush at Mang Ri & Ngoc Lay

In Vietnam central coast, Bach Ma national park is one of the best birding spot in the area. A bit further north, Phong Nha Ke Bang national park provides a good limestone forest and wonder caves.

In the northern Vietnam, there are several birding sites including Tam Dao national park, Ba Vi mountain, Cuc Phuong national park, Hoang Lien national park, Sap, Mt Fansipan, Ba Be national park.

Best time to go birding in Vietnam?

Birding in Vietnam is possible all year round, but the rainy season (late May, June, July, August, early September) makes walking hard at times. The winter (late September, October to early May) is drier. Many birds are at their most vocal in spring and are thus easier to locate.
