Bac Yen district covers an area of 1,085 square kilometres. It contains 1 township and 15 communes including Bac Yen township, Chieng Sai, Chim Van, Hang Chu, Hang Dong, Hong Ngai, Hua Nhan, Lang Cheu, Muong Khoa, Pac Nga, Phieng Ban, Phieng Con, Song Pe, Ta Khoa, Ta Xua, and Xim Vang.

Getting to Bac Yen

The best way to get to Bac Yen district is to take the short internal flight from Hanoi to Na San airport, Son La province. From there, hire a car or take a motor-taxi to be brought to Bac Yen.

If you travel in a group, hire a car from Hanoi may be a better solution. The car journey offers the chance to discover the northwest region of Vietnam.

There are public buses from Hanoi to Bac Yen Son La. Both day buses and night buses are available at My Dinh bus station. Buses are usually full at weekend.

When to go

Bac Yen features a tropical monsoon climate, which is characterized by torrential rains in the summer (from May to September) and cold and dry in winter (from November to January). Like many other travel places in Vietnam, Bac Yen also suffers from the influence of the dry and hot wind from Laos in summer which makes the weather intolerable sometimes.

Bac Yen’s climate is divided into two distinct seasons. Winter lasts from October to March of the next year, and summer from April to September. The annual average temperature is 21.4oC (the highest temperature is 27oC and the lowest one is 16oC).
