Hoang Su Phi Rice Terraces – Ha Giang

Hoang Su Phi rice terraces are considered as the most beautiful terraced fields in Vietnam. There is one rice crop per year in Hoang Su Phi. Around May (water-falling season – when it rains, when terraced fields are submerged) or September (ripen rice field season) is a beautiful time to travel Hoang Su Phi, Ha Giang.

Hoang Su Phi is a district in the western part of Ha Giang Province, at the foot of the Tay Con Linh Mountain range. With its terraced fields, Hoang Su Phi displays its charming beauty as a paradise dimly looms in the clouds.

Hoang Su Phi possesses around 3000 hectares of terraced fields spreading over the hills. These rice terraces are located mainly in 6 communes: Ban Luoc, San Sa Ho, Ban Phung, Ho Thau, Nam Ty, and Thong Nguyen.

The terraced rice fields are the fine results of the locals’ hard work and creativity. The view of terraced paddy fields is particularly breathtaking in harvest time with glittering layers of golden rice on mountain after mountain. Later September and October is the best time to visit and to witness the beauty of harvest time when all the terraced paddy-fields running along the Provincial Road 177 from Vinh Quang Town of Hoang Su Phi to Viet Quang Town near 30km, turn yellow with ripening rice.

The Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism of Vietnam has officially identified Hoang Su Phi’s terraced fields as the National Scenic Heritage in 2012, which is an affirmation for the recognition and appreciation of the authorities for that natural landscape.
