Da Mai Village Festival – Bac Giang

Da Mai Village Festival takes place from the 9th to 10th of February in the lunar month in Da Moi ancient village (now Da Mai ward, Bac Giang city) to commemorate the two princesses of Tran Dynasty Bao Nuong and Ngoc Nuong who had been fighting against the enemy in the 13th century.

The Legend told that, in the 13th century, the whole nation was engulfed in war flames by the brutal enemy Nguyen Mong invaders, under the leadership of Tran dynasty, our people have ingeniously, bravely defeated the enemy. Contributing to the feat, there were two princesses of King Tran Thai Tong, Ms Bao Nuong and Ngoc Nuong, who pretended to be merchant shippers, using the beauty trap in the Giang Tan wharf (the section of Thuong River belongings to present Da Mai ward) to make the enemy’s boats sunk into the rivers and the two princesses also sacrificed here. In front of the magnificent sacrifices of the two princesses, the king ordered the people here to set up the temple and to give the title “Chinh Linh Temple”.

To commemorate the achievements and merits of the two princesses, from the 9th to the 10th day of the lunar February (the main festival day was on lunar February 10th). The people of 07 residential quarters in Da Mai ward solemnly organized the village festival and the commemorating ceremony to the two princesses Bao Nuong and Ngoc Nuong. In even years, the festivals are held at the ward level; For the remaining years, the residential quarters have been hosted to organize in turn.

The focus of the ceremony is the sacred procession rite from the communal house to the main court of Chinh Linh temple, in addition to this ceremony, there also have sacrifices ritual ceremony, drum performances and folk games; The best of them is the boat competition on the Thuong River between 07 residential quarters of the ward.
