Khe Ro Nature Reserve – Bac Giang

Khe Ro Nature Reserve is located in An Lac commune, Son Dong district, 80 km northeast of Bac Giang city, in the northeast region of Vietnam. Total area of the nature reserve is 7,153 ha covering three basins of Khe Rong, Khe Din and Khe Nuoc Vang.

The highest peak of the nature reserve is 650m. The north-east has sloping mountain ranges, the southwest has high terrain, steep slopes, divided complex, with many cliffs standing.

Khe Ro Nature Reserve was established to preserve the typical tropical forest ecosystem, rare and precious animal and plant genetic resources of the north east region of Vietnam. The nature reserve is divided into three main zones: Strictly protected zones, ecological restoration zones and buffer zones.

The land of the reserve is formed on the sedimentary complex, including the main parent rocks: Sandstone, claystone, conglomerate and ancient silt. The main soil is Feranite formed on rocks, with medium to high humus content and high nutrient content.

Because it is located in a tropical monsoon climate, soil, climate favorable for the forest animals and plants here grow, the population of forest creatures here is rich and diverse.

This is a tropical forest with two main types: the dense forest on the low mountain peaks, with 8 plant communities and the broad-leaved lowland forest, on the slopes of high mountains, with three plant communities and tree species such as: Green shrimps, honey, bamboo groats, pine needles, pine conifers, pine conifers…

There are 786 plant species in 496 genera and 166 families, which are considered to have a rich diversity of species and plant families. Among these plants, there are 43 species of rare plants listed in the Red Book of Vietnam. The most typical are the trees, such as muntjac, bamboo, conifer, coniferous, syringe, agarwood, sliced flowers, scabies, scallops…

Forest animals in Khe Ro Nature Reserve are also quite diverse. There are 226 animal species belonging to 81 families, 34 orders, and 4 classes.

The flora system of the nature reserve is diverse in composition, family, species. It has many values in terms of economics, environmental protection, and genetic resources protection. Particularly, there are 16 species of mammals, 5 species of birds, 17 species of reptiles, frogs of rare species, named in the Vietnam Red Book.
